Description

After an early breakfast at Collpa Lodge, our tour heads for the Río Santa Teresa valley through more populated rural areas with coffee plantations (they say this is one of the best organic coffees in the world!), plantains, passion fruits, and home gardens. We stop along the river for a picnic lunch.

Lucma Lodge is in Lucmabamba at 7,003 feet (2,135 m) in an avocado grove. We get there in time to explore the small town village of Lucmabamba and may have an encounter with members of the local community.

After spending the night at this lodge, we start the last day of the hike. We pass by Llactapata (8,974 feet/2,736 m) from where we will have a distant, but very special view of Machu Picchu from the southwest, a vista that few tourists can appreciate. Our descent is along the Río Vilcanota through exuberant bamboo forests to where the train will take us to Aguas Calientes, and finally, one day later, to Machu Picchu.

Mountain Lodges of Peru, the company that manages the lodge, offers you one of the finest adventures: an opportunity to experience the essence of adventure within the confines of land-based comfort.

Mountain Lodges of Peru believes that a great adventure must be experienced on several levels, which is why we go beyond comfortable lodging and important hikes - we offer a unique opportunity to experience the ancient history of the Land of the Incas, detailed contemporary manifestations of the Incan culture, the most interesting and varied flora and exotic fauna, gastronomic surprises, the determination of the local people to move forward, new friends, and kindred souls.

At Mountain Lodges of Peru, we have had an active but private, historic role in the socioeconomic development of the communities that surround the lodges. In 2006, we sponsored the creation of Yanapana Peru, a non-governmental organization with two major objectives:

  • Raising the educational level of more than 150 families in the area.
  • Offering incentives to the local population, so that they take an active role in the tourism development of the area.
