In the northern Costa Rica canton of Guatuso lies one of the most unique and beautiful attractions in the country: Rio Celeste. Celeste is Spanish for sky blue, and, as its name implies, the river is famous for its impressive and intense light blue/turquoise water, like the color of a clear sky.
The color of Rio Celeste is a gift from nature that results from chemical reactions between calcium carbonate and sulfur coming from the nearby Tenorio Volcano. This phenomenon occurs in a place called a teñidero, where the Buena Vista and Roble rivers merge together, tinting the waters for the length of Rio Celeste.
In the background of this photo from the Hotel Catarata Río Celeste, you can see the waterfall, also one of the most beautiful in Costa Rica. During a hike along the river, you can enjoy the area's lush rainforest, fumaroles, streams, and volcanic mud.
