Description

The El Porvenir ecotourism project is located in the Eugenio Echeverria Castellot II ejido (communal land) in the Calakmul municipality.

El Porvenir is divided in two areas - the reception office, restaurant, and cabins are located in town; and the trails and camping area are close to a wetland in the wildlife conservation unit. Visitors will enjoy trekking along the interpretative trails, where it is common to spot howler and spider monkeys, many types of birds, and also detect animal tracks. This area is also an ideal place for biking tours.

Close by is the magnificent Hormiguero archaeological site that is under the care of the National Institute of Anthropology and History. The structures are found in an area that extends 902 feet (275 meters) from north to south and 655 feet (200 meters) from east to west, comprising three groups of mounds and plazas known as the South, Central, and North Groups that date back to the late Classic period from 660 to 800 A.D. Hormiguero architecture forms part of the Rio Bec style which is characterized by the horizontal line in its building of splendid, high-reaching towers crowned by small temples. Homiguero is an important archaeological site because it combines elements of the Rio Bec and Peten architectural styles.
