Description

El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve is framed by the beautiful natural scenery of the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Cortés, and the Central Desert of Baja California, in the heart of the peninsula. The marshes and mangroves, mountains, dunes, oases, plains, beaches, and lagoons surrounding the reserve are unaltered ecosystems containing rich biodiversity, including gray whales, sea lions, the peninsular pronghorn, bighorn sheep, cougars, many varieties of fish, crustaceans and mollusks, land and sea birds and several species of cacti. This area has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ecoturismo Kuyimá is a company that offers tourist services and it is managed by a community council consisting 95% of local people. Because the company’s tourism activities are conducted within a protected nature area, we seek to implement sustainable practices to maintain a low environmental impact and to generate social and economic wellbeing for local communities. Kuyimá is responsibly organized to keep its finances healthy; it operates according to an internal code of ethics for staff and visitors; and it develops training, environmental education, and interpretation programs for staff, communities, and tourists.

Getting There

Nearest international airport: Loreto (LTO)

Nearest local/national airport: Guerrero Negro (GUB)

Travel time to nearest airport: 2 hours

Traveling from within Mexico:

The area can be reached by car, taking the highway from Sonora to San Ignacio or the ferry from Guaymas Sonora and Mazatlan or Los Mochis Sinaloa to Santa Rosalía or La Pazó. You can also fly to any of the airports on the peninsula and then continue the trip by car or bus to San Ignacio.

International travelers:

Visitors from other countries can go directly to any airport on the peninsula (Loreto, La Paz, Los Cabos, Guerrero Negro, or Tijuana) and continue the journey by car. The Mexico City airport also has flights to the peninsula.

The area is accessible all year round.
