Description

Arajuno Jungle Lodge contains 217 acres (88 hectares) adjacent to the 8,645-acre (3,500-hectare) Jatun Sacha Forest Reserve. We have two rivers, 161 acres (65 hectares) of primary rainforest, 50 acres (20 hectares) of secondary rainforest, and seven acres (three hectares) of an organically managed farm and agro-forestry system.

We are located near the Amazonico animal rescue project, where we take our guests to visit. Other activities include floating on the Arajuno River, birding, hiking, swimming, and fishing. We have a lagoon and a native species breeding center where we are working with capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), agouties, aquatic turtles, dwarf caimans (Paleosuchus palpebrosus), and edible aquatic snails.

Making a Difference

Number of employees: 2

Percentage of local employees: 100%

We currently work with the local native communities developing self-sustaining, small-scale fish ponds.

Last year we sponsored a 200-hour local guide certification course. We have developed a breeding center for several local animal species to promote conservation. We helped the local community obtain a Peace Corps volunteer who lived and worked here for two years developing several small-scale conservation and community development projects, as well as environmental education activities.
