Description

Located on the banks of the Vilcanota River and at the foot of the Machu Picchu ruins, Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel offers exclusive five-star service. Its rooms are intimate and in complete contact with nature, far from the noise of the town of Aguas Calientes. Sumaq is immersed in dense vegetation that is the entryway to the enigmatic archeological monument of Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Sumaq’s expansive rooms reflect Inca culture in their architecture and interior design. After spending the day exploring Machu Picchu, you can get a relaxing massage using biodegradable products at the Aqlla spa or enjoy one of our exquisite varieties of Pisco Sour cocktails from the bar.

The Machu Picchu archeological site is a natural area that is protected by the nation of Peru and has also been named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO).

Machu Picchu has an area of 80,502 acres (32,592 hectares) that is home to a number of bird, mammal, and flower species. More than 420 species of birds, 100 species of butterflies, and more than 300 native orchid species have been recorded.

Making a Difference

Number of employees: 83

Percentage of local employees: 60%

Staff and guests at Sumaq are committed to a single objective – preserving and protecting the environment through our natural resource conservation policies.

We have a sustainability plan that includes natural resource conservation policies including water and energy savings, natural resource protection, and support of local communities.

We share informational materials about natural resources with our partners and guests and three or four times per year, we organize best management practices workshops for our staff.

Because we believe in the conservation of cultural resources, we aim to keep the local Cusco culture alive in the activities we offer at Sumaq. You can learn about local cuisine in our Peruvian cooking and bartending classes, and the mysticism and magic of Cusco are embodied in the “Andean Wedding” and the traditional “Tribute to the Earth” rituals.

Another very important theme at Sumaq is caring for the planet and its natural resources. Since we are immersed in the cultural heritage of Machu Picchu, which is protected by UNESCO, we focus on environmental protection and conservation in our operations.

Our Environmental Management Plan calls for the purchase of biodegradable cleaning products and we also try to acquire organic produce – to date 11% of our produce (fruits and vegetables) comes from the communities of Urubamba and we also buy organic tubers from the community of Yanaoca in Canas province in Cusco, which is home to more than 15 families.
