Nestled within 326 acres of rainforests, mangroves, and coastal dunes, Hacienda Tres Ríos is an eco-friendly resort built 9+ feet (2.8 meters) above sea level on stilts that allows for natural river flow. The resort was creatively designed to reduced electricity consumption from air-conditioning by 38% and from lighting by 70%. In addition to using 100% biodegradable products and recycling 100% of solid waste, the resort's custom-designed operating systems reduce water consumption by 40%. At the forefront of sustainable tourism development, Hacienda Tres Ríos offers luxurious guest experiences while protecting the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

The single most significant achievement that Tres Ríos has made in the past two years in the area of sustainable tourism has been to develop a tourism model that successfully combines luxury accommodations with a strict care for the environment.

Traditionally, large luxury hotels are not considered sustainable, as they tend to impact large natural areas and intensively use resources. However, the Hacienda Tres Ríos hotel was conceived, designed, and built to significantly reduce impacts on the local ecosystems and make the most efficient use of the available resources.

In order to guarantee that we follow strict environmental criteria and our environmental mission, the hotel’s development follows the Tres Ríos Environmental Planning and Management Route (EPM), which guides all activities and construction. This planning and management methodology insures the development, implementation, and promotion of sustainable luxury tourism practices throughout all of the resort’s components and development phases. The Environmental Team was active in guiding the design, construction, and operation of the hotel. Large investments were made in efficient and modern infrastructure that allows Tres Ríos to significantly reduce its use of resources such as water and energy.

Guests at the hotel can enjoy the full service and benefits of a Grand Tourism Luxury hotel while knowing that the hotel is environmentally responsible. This is the reason why the Mexican Ministry of the Environment (SEMARNAT) has recognized Tres Ríos as a “Model for sustainable tourism development” (2006, Semarnat)
