Description

Surrounded by 870 acres (352 hectares) of forest and located just 1.5 miles from Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna de San Carlos, Costa Rica is the Arenal Observatory Lodge. The hotel is located at the southern base of the volcano and its rooms have spectacular views of the lake and the volcano, giving our visitors an opportunity to admire one of the world's most active volcanoes. Built on a hill above the Agua Caliente River and Danta Creek, Arenal Observatory Lodge is a safe place because the terrain does not allow lava flows to pass the flanks of the hill and this area is classified as low-risk. Since March of 2007, the lava flows have moved to the southwest side of the volcano and views are spectacular from the lodge.

The hotel's grounds include 270 acres (110 hectares) of incredible natural rainforest and 400 acres (162 hectares) undergoing reforestation. They are covered with trails where you can enjoy hikes, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing.

Due to its location, the Arenal Observatory Lodge can serve as a base for visits to other places of interest such as the Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge, Cavernas de Venado, Monteverde Cloud Forest, river rapids, kayaking, hanging bridges, canopy tours, fishing, hot springs, or the various beaches of Guanacaste.

Rooms

We have 48 guest rooms in various buildings spread throughout the property. Most have a view of the volcano and its lava flow, and all are surrounded by lush gardens. Throughout the lodge, you can feel the volcano's commanding presence.

Making a Difference

Number of employees: 48

Percentage of local employees: 98%

We are located within Arenal National Park, which borders the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, in an area that is characterized by dense primary rainforest with unpolluted streams and rivers. Because we value the importance of this environment, we promote the efficient use of resources and develop practices that have little impact on the natural surroundings.

We've established a good relationship with the community and are a source of employment for residents. We are maintaining 270 acres (110 hectares) of natural forest and 400 acres (162 hectares) undergoing reforestation with pine and eucalyptus. We use pristine mountain spring water certified by a laboratory approved by the Costa Rican Ministry of Health.

Getting There

Nearest international airport: San José (SJO)

Nearest local/national airport: La Fortuna (FON)

Travel time to nearest airport: 35 minutes

The Arenal Observatory Lodge is in a secluded destination at 2,500 feet (735 m) above sea level. Because of its location in the middle of the rainforest, the last 5.6 miles (9 km) is a dirt road and can get rough, particularly during the rainy season. However, a two wheel drive car can easily get into the lodge with no problems.

If renting a car, we strongly suggest getting one with a GPS. We share the same route as the main entrance to Arenal Volcano National Park. The best and most up to date source for information on road conditions is contacting Arenal Observatory Lodge by phone.
