Dominican Republic Travel and Tourism

The Dominican Republic makes up the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola (Haiti comprises the western side). The country is Spanish-speaking, though in tourist areas, you’ll encounter many English speakers. The country has tropical weather, with seasonal rain and the potential for hurricanes in late summer and early fall.

The Samaná Peninsula offers a great place to get away from the hustle of popular tourist destinations. There, you can find miles of empty beaches and secluded coves for snorkeling or fishing. The location is also home to a marine mammal sanctuary and humpback whale mating ground, which makes for some of the best whale watching in the world.

If you’re looking for a more extreme way to enjoy the outdoors in Dominican Republic, head to Cabarete, the country’s premiere surfing and kiteboarding destination. Characterized by historic Spanish architecture, the colonial city of Santo Domingo is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site.

The Dominican Republic has nine national parks and the highest peak in the Caribbean - Pico Duarte. Whether it’s a trip to learn the Meringue, find white sand beaches, or to do both, when you take advantage of SustainableTrip.org, you’ll know you’re supporting sustainable business during your stay.

Sustainable Lodging in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is known for its vast selection of secluded all-inclusive resorts, but smaller beach bungalows are also readily available. If you’re looking to experience city life, Santo Domingo offers many hotels.
